Foot health and menopause: Is there a link?

October marks Menopause Awareness Month, and whilst many people are aware that menopause can cause symptoms such as poor sleep, mood swings and hot flashes, something that is less talked about is the affect it can have on your feet.

Here’s a few reasons why that you might’ve not known about:

1. A Decrease in Oestrogen

Oestrogen plays a key part in supporting collagen & protecting cartilage from breaking down. During menopause, oestrogen levels rapidly decrease, which can result in the padding of the feet becoming thinner. This can cause pain and discomfort when walking or standing for long periods due to the cushioning no longer being as shock absorbent.

Powerstep Insoles

Built-in neutral arch support and two layers of plush cushioning are the perfect balance of comfort and support. Cradles the arch and heel, adding stability and motion control to limit excess stress on feet, ankles, joints, and tendons.

2. Stiffness & Sore Joints

Another side effect of lower oestrogen levels is that it can lead to inflammation and reduce bone strength. Many women notice increased pain in their feet and ankles, as it can worsen arthritis or trigger new foot issues like plantar fasciitis or heel pain.

3. Dry & Cracked Skin

Hormonal and skin changes during menopause means that the skin retains less moisture. This can lead to dry and cracked skin on the feet, making them painful, itchy and could possibly lead to infections if not treated.

4. Burning Feet

Another common but equally as uncomfortable side effect brought on by menopause is the sensation of burning feet on a night, which can be brought on from temperature fluctuations, inflammation or dehydration.

5. Change in Foot Shape

As hormones shift, your feet may feel tighter or uncomfortable in shoes. This is due to ligament laxity, which can cause arches to flatten and make feet feel like a different size and shape.
