Chilblains

Cold temperatures, dry environments and heavy footwear can make our feet sensitive, dry, and uncomfortable during the Winter months. As a result of the damp, wintry weather Chilblains can develop, commonly on our toes, heels, and fingers. Chilblains are small and often itchy inflammations on the skin that occur as a reaction to cold temperatures. Typically, chilblains cause a burning and itching sensation in the affected areas, which can feel more intense when walking into warm environments. Some cases of chilblains can last for several months, others can clear up in weeks without treatment. However, to prevent chilblains on your feet, we recommend some of our footcare products– perfect for this time of year.

Body Essentials Warm your Sole is designed to soothe chilblains and other conditions caused by sensitivity to wintry conditions. A warming application suitable for use on fragile skin. This unique blend contains marjoram, ginger, lemon, and geranium essential oils, which combine to help relieve the discomfort of chilled feet. This antiseptic, soothing oil aids circulation and stimulates the body’s natural defense mechanisms to protect and warm damaged skin. Put a small amount of oil into the palm of your hand and massage into the affected area twice a day.

This Foot Bath from Gehwol helps soothe aching, sore, and sweaty feet. It revitalises tired feet and eliminates troublesome soreness. Natural essential oils from lavender, rosemary, and thyme promote the circulation. If your skin gets cold, it is important to warm it up gradually. Heating the skin too quickly– for example, by placing your feet in hot water or near a heater– is one of the main causes of chilblains. Use the Gehwol foot bath with luke warm water, to avoid damaging the skin. We suggest warming your feet before going outdoors– soak them for several minutes and dry thoroughly.

Our new season wool socks from Thought are available in both Men’s and Women’s sizes. Crafted from Thought’s sustainable wool blend, these socks are naturally breathable and antibacterial, helping to keep your feet warm yet fresh during Winter.

The Spirularin Warming Cracked Heel Cream combines the intense moisturising and nourishing properties of Urea, Snow Mushroom, Magnolia Bark extract and organic Coconut Oil with the anti-microbial protection of Spiralin to protect cracked skin against infections, also providing a warming relief. Moisturising your feet regularly helps to stop your skin from drying out and the skin from cracking, which would make them more sensitive to the cold.

If your chilblains are severe and keep returning, speak to your local Podiatrist.
